I have a need to know my own identity. Art provides a way for me to know who I am: know my soul, know my thoughts, know my beliefs, know my feelings, know my experiences, know my pain, know my joy know my identity. Art evokes the mysterious insights of my unconscious, making visible that which is invisible. By engaging in the process of creation, I explore the different characteristics of knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of who I am.
Whether Im altering a book, burning an image into wood or constructing sculptures out of found objects, art has always been about exposing the mysteries of the body, where the medium realizes my curiosity. Furthermore, much of my work specifically has to do with changes that occur in the body and how we deal with those changes mentally and emotionally. The material functions as the most important part of the work in that it holds its own identity, one that I as the artist am altering in some way.
